It echoed in my mind long after the words left their lips, like a storms that wouldn’t pass. At first, it hurt. To be told that very core of who I am wasn’t enough, that it needed to be reshaped, polished, twisted into something else to fit their version of love, was suffocating.
Change who I am. But what did that mean, really? Was it the way I speak when I get excited, stumbling over words because the thoughts come too fast? Or maybe it was the quiet nights I cherish when I just want to sit in silence, thinking, feeling, being. Or maybe, just maybe, it was the parts of me that refuse to fit into neat little boxes, the ones that refuse to conform to the idea of what they thought I should be.
I replayed the moment over and over, searching for where I went wrong. But the more I thought about it, the clearer it became. I didn’t go wrong. I am who I am, and if that’s not enough for someone, I can’t rip myself apart to fit their ideal. I can’t be expected to change the essence of my being for someone else’s comfort.
They wanted me to become someone I wasn’t. And I realized, slowly, painfully, that this wasn’t love. Love doesn’t ask you to destroy yourself. It doesn’t demand that you strip away your layers until you’re nothing but a hollow shell of what someone else wants you to be.
I sat with that thought for a long time, feeling the weight of it settle into my chest. I won’t be with you if you don’t change who you are, they said, as if I should jump at the chance to become someone else for them. But why should I? Why should anyone?
Love is about acceptance, not conditions. It’s about holding space for one another’s flaws, quirks, and differences, not trying to erase them. If you can’t love for who I am now, why should I change to suit your version of who I should be?
In the end, I chose myself. I chose the person I am today, with all my messiness, all my scars, and all my beauty. I chose to be whole instead of fractured. And maybe, just maybe, one day, someone will love me for that — not in spite of it.
But even if they don’t, I’ll still have myself. And that’s enough.
