For most of my young adulthood, I really didn’t like the holiday season.
It’s a bunch of traffic, obligatory parties, and lacks the childhood magic of Star Wars toys on Christmas morning.
Plus, I’m not religious so I don’t even have that sort of tie-in with Christmas.
Then I started noticing other people creating their own traditions.
For instance, there’s this friend of mine who really digs Chex Mix!
As a matter of fact, she had Chex Mix for dinner last night.
“In my defense,” she said, “I only allow myself Chex Mix in the month of December–the other 11 months are a Chex Mix free zone.”
Also, she and her kid and I were watching Strangers Things and Chex Mix has a nice retro feel, so it was a theme dinner.
That’s a cool tradition.
And I love CHEX MIX!
I also rarely eat it. But I’m thinking I may adopt the “December is for Chex Mix” tradition.
For me, it’s those damn rye chips. They are my favorite part.
When I was a kid, my brother and I used to go to the Hickory Farms store, when those still existed, and eat all of the rye chip samples.
And most of the other samples in the store, too.
We were like jackals.
By the time my mom was done Christmas shopping in the mall, we’d have picked Hickory Farms clean.
But, yeah. Feel free to start your own holiday traditions. It’s one of the few things that’s good about being a grownup.
I may even go out and get the Beer Menorah from Schmaltz Brewing Company.
Because beer. And candles.
What’s more “Holiday” than that?
Dreaming of December…
