Fam,
Many know the hashtag—few know the real story and decades-long movement behind it. So we’re joining #MeToo in their anniversary week, kicking off tomorrow to go #BeyondTheHashtag and amplify the work. Join us in the movement!
For generations, organizers and advocates have worked tirelessly to expose the rotten roots of sexual violence and harm. Building on that legacy, today’s anti–sexual violence movement makers have used hashtags like #MeToo to create spaces for people to tell their truths and have difficult conversations, and for survivors to find community. The hard work of #MeToo survivors and organizers has permeated every industry, every newsroom, and every facet of government, with great wins and significant learnings.
Still, Black cis and trans women, girls, and gender-nonconforming and non-binary people experience some of the highest rates of sexual violence, and yet their stories are often underexamined—and worse, silenced. In an era when we are demanding justice for Black lives, we cannot forget about Black survivors.
