The pastor’s mixed messaging has led to bewilderment about whether his enormous Lakewood Church, formerly the home of the Houston Rockets, is open to needy residents in the area. The controversy kicked off on Sunday when the church’s official Instagram page announced that Lakewood was inaccessible to the community. But some Houston-area folks took to Twitter to post pictures to the contrary, showing what looked like a minimal amount of flooding nearby. On Tuesday, Osteen said in a statement: “We have never closed our doors. We will continue to be a distribution center to those in need. We are prepared to house people once shelters reach capacity. Lakewood will be a value to the community in the aftermath of this storm.” It’s unclear why Lakewood is waiting for other shelters to reach capacity or how it went from inaccessible on Sunday to open for business on Tuesday. Either way, the church sounds like it’ll be part of the recovery process in Houston moving forward. For his role in the confusion, however, Pastor Osteen has a devilishly low 19 percent positive score on Social over the last three days. –Alex Shultz
