But that is not always the case when it comes to social behavior. Even some Reagan conservatives were shocked after about 150 Evangelical leaders signed the so-called Nashville Statement earlier this week, condemning any and all pairings besides strictly heterosexual marriage. Denny Burk, president of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, which drew up the statement, compared it to seminal Christian texts like the Nicene Creed. However, other conservatives Christians such as Chicago Pastor Skye Jethani said the statement rang hollow, given the overwhelming Evangelical support for President Donald Trump even after those “infamous” Access Hollywood tapes came to light last year. Scott Sauls, lead pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, said that although he agreed with the statement, it was a terrible idea that could only alienate LGBTQ Christians. Social agrees with the critics. The Nashville Statement gets 69 percent negatives, with one sentiment succinctly stating Social’s reaction: “hateful.” –Hugo Guzman
