Black families deserve to live in safe communities free from police terror, harassment, and violence. That is why we must finish the work we started in 2020 and realize the Black agenda by divesting from deadly public safety infrastructure and investing in Black people, starting with the midterm elections on November 8th.
Police have a poor record of doing their most fundamental job: solving murders and other serious crimes. For years, we’ve cut essential services like public education, food banks, and prevention programs, and expected the police to solve social problems for which they’re neither trained nor qualified.
The same legislators who supported failed tough-on-crime policies decades ago renewed their commitment to law enforcement by investing $60 million a year for five years in police departments. But we know the police don’t keep us safe.
The best way to make our communities safer is by investing resources in people to provide good jobs, schools, and universal healthcare. In addition, we must reallocate spending on over-bloated police budgets into professionals better trained and suited to do things like homeless outreach, offering mental-health treatment, and de-escalating violence.
In this midterm election, reimagine public safety by investing in Black communities. Vote to invest in people, not more police. When we invest in people, our communities will be safer for everyone.
