Last week’s Senate Judicial Committee hearings on Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was great political theater.
Precious few hours before the hearings commenced, Republicans dumped over 42,000 documents for committee review. “Not a single senator will be able to review these records before tomorrow,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) tweeted.
Argument, protests, complaints, and ineffectual, bootless babble began the hearings. For four days Kavanaugh was grilled with tough questions.
Who said what, who scored the most points, whose questioning was most impressive is irrelevant.
Republicans control the Senate. Republicans will get their nominee approved. It’s a foregone conclusion according to virtually everyone. They are probably correct but I’m not accepting it! “… Kavanaugh’s public approval is among the lowest for any nominee since it {Gallup} first started tracking in 1987.”
Heck, who gives a hoot in hell what American voters want!
Now let’s talk turkey! Here’s the rub. Many Republicans fight dirty. Some, particularly the President are happy to obfuscate and lie. Republicans don’t tend to represent the actual needs of their constituents despite convincing them they do!
Democrats, on the other hand, are a bit different. They’re not perfect by any means. Let’s face it, had the DNC not screwed around, Senator Bernie Sanders might very well have received the Democratic Presidential nomination and gone on to triumph over Donald Trump.
Putting the above travesty aside, most Democrats care about the dignity of the human condition. They want access for all to quality medical care, education, a living wage, a woman’s right to choose and the vast mosaic that comprises a “decent quality of life.”
But Democrats buy into the assumption that they must enter the boxing ring with 12-pound gloves and lead shoes while Republicans go in barbed and bare-fisted. This must change!
Yes, a great show was put on last week. Even as venerable a news outlet as the AP believes, “Win or lose Kavanaugh confirmation fight defines Democrats.” The article then went on to say, “Schumer, on Friday, seemed pleased with the result of the hard-edged approach. He said in a statement that Democrats “were able to shine a bright light — for the American people and Republican Senators to see — on Judge Kavanaugh’s troubling views on women’s rights, presidential power, and protections for people with pre-existing conditions.” “This was a good week.” The week is over and the batteries in the Democrat’s light have burned out!
Yes, they made a fuss and were heard? What is one good week when the Senate is about to confirm arguably the most conservative judge since Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Bork for The Supreme Court in 1987. Bork was rejected by the Senate.
If confirmed, Kavanaugh’s rulings will affect you, your children and grandchildren.
Earlier in this article, I said it was good theatre. Majority leader Schumer said, “it was a good week.” My business had a good week back in 1991 when I produced a mailing for the Trump Taj Mahal. I made lots of money. I was paid in full — if Donald only knew😊 It didn’t last!
Judge Kavanaugh if confirmed will last. The Atlantic states, “If Kavanaugh is confirmed, his decisions from the Supreme Court bench could shape legal standards on executive power, religious freedom, affirmative action, privacy, and more for decades to come.” Sound good to you?
When we think of good theatre we imagine an enjoyable two-hour show. My question to all progressive politicians is what now? You showed the American people you care. Great. But, did you make a lasting difference?
Mean-spirited Mitch McConnell predicts Kavanaugh will be seated by Oct. 20th in time for the beginning of the Fall Supreme Court session. This is the same obstructionist that refused to consider President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee. “…only hours after Scalia’s death was announced, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared any appointment by the sitting president to be null and void. He said the next Supreme Court justice should be chosen by the next president — to be elected later that year.”
President Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh. Mid-term elections are just over 2 months away. Shouldn’t we wait until after the election and swearing in of the 116th Congress to choose a justice nominated by arguably the most corrupt and destructive President in American history?
One week of political histrionics changes nothing. Politicians and all Americans who care about the future of this country must take a stance. A legal way must be found to derail the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh.
I’m an optimist. Don’t let our politicians sit back and say, “we tried, but we just don’t have the votes.” Donald Trump lost the popular vote by nearly 3,000,000 people despite Russian interference. Yet he won the election.
Let’s not allow another travesty! Millions of bright, creative minds should be able to come up with a legal way to stop Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation.
Talk to your friends, relatives, colleagues, and politicians. Brainstorm. Mobilize. The future of America is at stake! The time to act is now!
