Come on let’s be honest. It’s so fucking annoying when everyone is showing off their relationship online.
Actually, let me be more precise, it’s the “perfect” showcase that really grinds my gears.
We all know that one couple that uploads a shit ton of stories and posts showing how amazing their life and relationship is but in real life it’s just meh.
…
The fakeness is disgusting
How can a relationship be perfect all the time?
That’s fake.
Of course, people that showcase their relationships online won’t document the fights — unless they’re crazy.
But it’s safe to say that — like every relationship — fights are normal. If there are no fights then something is going wrong.
We’re humans with many quirks that others might not understand or like.
Fights are inevitable.
So why is there a need for someone to only showcase the good part of their relationship?
Keep this phrase in mind:
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then maybe it’s a parrot.
I know, I know. Your mind is blown right now.
…
Those standards are getting out of hand
One major issue with social media?
Everyone can access immediately a post or a video from a crazy or big gesture someone has done for their significant other.
Our dumb little brains start to normalize these behaviors and guess what.
When you don’t have something you find normal and nice you start getting jealous.
Jealous of the romantic trip to the Bahamas.
Jealous of that brand-new Prada bag.
Jealous of that date in one of the most boujee restaurants in the city.
Clearly, these standards aren’t only materialistic but the more you interact and see these actions the more you seek them.
And guess what?
Sometimes — for obvious reasons — our significant other can’t provide us with all these crazy standards we end up creating.
…
The unlimited options
This is probably the biggest and most important reason why social media platforms are destroying unlimited relationships.
The options.
Do you feel a bit uneasy and sad after you and your significant other had an argument?
Well, guess what!
You can have another 5–10–20–50–100 other people ready to give you all the attention you need to feel better and stop being sad.
But wait, they can also offer something more.
Something more physical… I think you get the point.
This + the unrealistic standards = in a delusional expectation of how a relationship should be… Perfect.
I’m no mathematician but this equation seems pretty legit to me.
So as you can clearly see — social media fucks everything up when it comes to relationships.
…
The solution?
Focus on real life and not on your fake online one.
All these Tik Tok Relationship Gurus are just young people trying to make money off your misery by promoting a very unhealthy and toxic mindset.
“If he does this, drop him”
“Listen to me queen you deserve better”
“Your girlfriend is out there cheating on you because she hasn’t replied to your texts in 5 minutes”
Real and robust relationships take hard work, compromise, honesty, and discussion, and are times when there are a lot and intense ups and downs.
Nothing worth having is built easily and effortlessly.
Especially a relationship.
So, next time you scroll on social media — beware of the dangers.
