The birds in the photo above are not moving. They were moving when this picture was captured. The photo isn’t birds flying. The photo is a memory in which birds were flying.
Yet we look at the picture and sense and somehow feel the flight of the birds.
Using imagination and memory we may experience our bodies as birds flying, feeling the wind, seeing the pink sky, hearing our own wings pushing off the air, our companions talking to us.
The stillest of pictures is filled with motion. We are the way that still pictures become movement. With our use of awareness we connect the world to itself. The picture at the top of the page was there before you saw it and will only be there for you if you look at or perhaps remember it.
Parenting as a, father or mother is as obscure as the ‘flying’ birds photo. We must use our past to understand what we are seeing. Along the way let’s remember that memories are photos, whether mental, emotional or physical. The real parenting takes place as we participate in this picture as its happening, in love.
