Rule breaker
Last night I did a thing. I did it without permission, I was alone, it was dark, and I was distracted. I broke all the rules and teachings from this world of how women supposed to act. And what did I break all of these rules for?
A movie. That movie was: Rachel Hollis’ “Made For More Encore” documentary.
I went to the movie by myself. I wasn’t meeting up with anyone and, I would be in a theater full of strangers. My best friend was at this same movie 250ish miles away and texted me “Why have I never been to a movie by myself before?”
I wasn’t alone in all my worry and guilty thoughts.
Societies rules
Young ladies are taught and reminded continuously through the news that if a woman is alone, it’s her fault if she is raped, murdered or the victim of some other crime. How was she dressed? Was she asking for it? What if what she said isn’t true? How many sexual partners has she had?
I’m 37, and for the first time in my life, I knew I was broke all of the “rules or expectations” placed on women just because they were born female. And I did this all for a movie.
Men, are you raising your little girls this way?
Women have wasted their lives, being taught to live as their only worth to the outside world is to protect their innocence. Because of this, some women have never been to a movie unless accompanied. Do men acknowledge this as a problem? Can a man imagine the fear that comes with “if anything that happens to you that’s bad, it is your fault unless you have a witness”? How are you raising your little girls?
What did I get from last night?
Last night I, as a woman: 1. I broke all the rules and, 2. It was absolutely worth it and, 3. The world didn’t fall apart.
