It’s so nice, the comfort we feel when everything is moving at a steady pace, when it seems like things are going smoothly, according to plan. When our job is going well, when our kids are on the right track, when we can have a peaceful beer at the end of the week.
Pure illusion. We can control almost nothing all the time, every day, every hour. Everything can change in a second, in the blink of an eye, and when we realize it, nothing will have a chance to be as it was before. An accident, an incident, a financial problem, a health problem, death, the end of love — we fall and are forced to leave wherever we are. There is no comfort zone that is untouchable.
The world is moving so fast and unpredictably that we try to maintain some constancy where we can, to at least alleviate our anxiety a little. It’s okay to maintain routine in certain aspects of life, so that our senses can reorganize themselves inside, amidst the unexpected events that arrive. The bad thing is trying to control the world and resist any and all kinds of change. There are people who can’t move a lamp, don’t buy a product that doesn’t have a certain brand, don’t eat if it’s not at restaurant X, and don’t drink if it’s not drink Y.
They don’t change the type of blouse, pants, or haircut. They spend their vacations on the same beach, at the same inn, invariably in the second half of the month. Loyalty is admirable regarding feelings, but in the course of life, there must be variety, change, progress. Stagnation is a slow erosion of the spirit, a quiet fading of possibilities. And what is life without possibilities? Without the thrill of the unknown, the excitement of what’s just beyond our reach?
Dare, once in a while. It feels so good. Change your hair color, the height of your heels, the length of your skirt. Change the route of the road, the songs on your playlist, the book on your nightstand. Change on the outside, change on the inside. Try new flavors, watch Mexican soap operas. Try new itineraries and, if you’re single, try new kisses. Don’t be afraid to change, don’t be afraid of the new. If nothing is predictable, be a little unpredictable too.
Because life does not wait for us to be ready. It moves, it shifts, it challenges. And believe me: liberating surprises await those who dare to cross the illusory limits of their comfort zone. The future belongs to the ones who embrace it, not the ones who fear it.
