In this series, I want to share lessons I’ve gleaned over the years to offer some perspective to co-travelers on life’s journey because learning from others’ experiences means avoiding unnecessary pitfalls and charting more fulfilling courses for ourselves.
If you allow the drive for the satisfaction of your sexual desires to take center stage in your life and equate sex with fulfillment and happiness, you will erroneously be led to believe that your ability to satisfy your appetite is the key to your living a fulfilling life. But what if I told you that sex isn’t all there is?
It is quite natural to feel drawn to those we find attractive. The desire for that physical connection is deeply ingrained in our biology. However, you should know that it is true intimacy that is key, and it extends far beyond the physical: there are emotional and even spiritual connections at play when it comes to forming a wholesome, deep, and meaningful relationship.
Indiscriminate sex will only temporarily satisfy your physical urges or offer some superficial validation, but it will often leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled in the long run. So, far from filling a void in your life, it will be creating one! In the end, those numerous casual encounters will rarely lead to the intimacy of genuine connections we naturally crave.
For one thing, real connections engender a sense of trust, emotional support, and the type of understanding that goes beyond casual flings which, are devoid of depth and emotional investment. Understand this and you will be able to navigate your social interactions more consciously, and make better-informed decisions along the way about the kind of relationships you may wish to establish.
Again, the ramifications of casual, indiscriminate sex have turned out to be quite serious for many, especially later in life. Apart from serious health risks and unplanned pregnancies, there has also been an emotional toll to pay. So, bear in mind that sex isn’t the be-all and end-all of life. Open yourself up to more fulfilling experiences.
As you go through life, learn to value true intimacy in its more wholesome form and build relationships based on trust, respect, and genuine connection, and this means expanding your focus beyond just fleeting physical pleasures to experience true fulfillment and happiness.
