PTSD. War. Stigmas of men in media. What’s going on with our Mo Bros today?

Movember Foundations and The Good Men Project have partnered up in honor of raising awareness for men’s health issues!
For all of this month, these Mo Bros will be growing their most ludicrous staches to help raise awareness for men’s health! Will these Mo Bros grow great mos? Check back daily for updates on their facial hair and the issues that these Bros are talking about this Movember.

Daily Mo Update
Tonight I’m going to a fancy-ish party an I’ll be sporting my stubbly Mo. Lord knows I’ll get a ton of looks but more than that I hope for questions. Even rude ones like “what is that thing on your face?” I’ll calmly and politely reply “I’m glad you asked. Are you aware that millions of men of all ages are suffering in silence due to their depression?” Not that I want to turn a nice party into a depressing convo, but any chance to spread awareness and help reach out to people is a good one.

This year I want to put a little more focus on certain areas of men’s mental health, especially one that has very little support from where it matters most. Soldiers of all branches of the military are affected by PTSD, and it can be a terrible thing. We do not all know the things they encounter unless we’re there with them, but some bring the fear and the pain back with them in ways they can’t always handle on their own. Our Military members that are suffering need our help, and they can barely get the treatment they need. Whether it’s because of stigma or funding, there seems to be a door that is closed to their specific needs that we as a country need to assess.

Tired as hell, the five o’clock shadow makes its appearance on day 5.

“We take care of our dental health. We don’t take care of our mental health…I think the solution to making this world better is if we would just be healthy mentally.” – Howie Mandel
You should always strive to have a healthy mindset, but remember we’re all in this together.

Daily Mo Update
You can’t tell by my face… but I am falling asleep in the office today. My eyes are like lead… and I think my mustache knows it. It seems to be plotting something. Hopefully just some more growth, but as I am nearing the 72 hour mark with little/no sleep… I’m beginning to wonder if …maybe… maybe my mustache IS plotting something… I hope whatever it is, it involves watching The Flash and falling asleep… that’s about all I have energy for today.
Movember Awareness
Men, just like women, are subject to the stereotypes of the media. Men in ads are nearly always either shirtless, or jacked. And if they are shirtless, then they are usually rippling with muscle and covered in oil. Men, for years, have been told/ taught not to show their emotions. It’s only in the past decade with foundations of support like The Good Men Project, that men ( like me) are showing their emotions and embracing their feelings. The problem with this, is that in accepting how we feel, we embrace all the bad as well: seeing these men in media and not feeling as attractive; feeling embarrassed because of your body; feeling too skinny or too fat. These stigmas need to be destroyed.
Men, like women, are all wonderful in their own way. We should not be focusing on one aspect of human beauty, but all of it… because not everyone thinks a walking muscle machine is attractive, some people like the Chris Farley look. It’s about time we changed our standards of beauty and stop making men (and obviously women, as this is also a MAJOR problem for women) feel anything less than amazing about who they are. It breeds negativity, and bolsters negative thoughts. Keep the good ju-ju flowing!

Daily Mo Update
I reached out to a friend today who seemed like they needed some encouragement. I didn’t know how much they’d been hurting, and for how long. It turned out to be pretty serious. I’m glad I was able to listen and be there.
Life is tough sometimes. I know I don’t sleep enough, and get too caught up in my schedule to process what I’m dealing with. Like many men, I feel isolated much of the time, and don’t have a lot of close friends here. It’s important to nurture the relationships you have, and foster new, healthy ones.
Stay stachey and classy, mobros.
