She still says his name when she sleeps
The name of the other guy.
The one before me.
His name hangs on her lips like the honey dripped on the side of a tea cup; sweet but not enough.
I hear her, but I don’t say anything.
What would be the point?
She talks about him during waking hours too. Reminiscing.
She tells me stories of their exploits together. The details of their adventures. Tales of birthdays and Christmases, dog adoptions, and that time he locked his keys in the car. They were stuck in DC back in the days when you REALLY didn’t want to be stuck in DC after dark.
And they argued.
I listen mostly unaffected. Because rattling around in my head are the ghosts of my past too. And my adventures.
So many of my relationships ended because I’m a lot. I can be tough to be with as I try to work on my own issues. The guy before me was a lot too.
I listen to her. I remember what she says. And I’ll try not to make the same mistakes as the last guy. The exact mistakes I’ve made in the past with other women.
One whose name I still whisper too.
