Night tide comes
Waves break so close to shore more than once I wake ready to run
Then tide sucks out, sand a vacuum in ebb’s wake
Finally, give in. The draw pulls me down to the break
As tide goes way out, I go far offshore, sea swell well above my head
Dark night, moon since set and heavy shelf breakers, just, right, there
Fingers brush cold dense sand, bioluminescence responds with purple sparkles
Gravity’s pull and ocean pressure–to the low tide night, the whole Pacific a bubble next to me,
about to pop with the seventh wave crash splash…
…running backward, eyes on the ocean until can’t run backward fast enough then run forward then up up up the dune as the beach is now gone, only riprap and seafoam until sea swell is sucked back and I return full.
