Many of us think success happens overnight. But is that really true?
Think about this. You see someone’s big break on LinkedIn: a promotion, a dream job, or a new business, and it looks easy. Right?
What you don’t see are the nights they doubted themselves, the rejections they kept to themselves, or the small steps they took each day when no one was watching.
That’s what real growth looks like.
In the end, it’s not talent or luck that shapes your career. It’s being consistent.
Try The Brick-by-Brick Rule
Think of your career as a house you’re building. Each skill you learn, experience you gain, and risk you take is a brick. You can’t build the whole house in a day, but you can lay one brick today, another tomorrow, and keep going until you have a strong foundation.
My friend Daniel worked in customer service. He wanted to get into data analysis, but he didn’t have a degree or any technical background. Instead of quitting out of frustration, he started small. Every night after work, he watched YouTube tutorials. On weekends, he practised Excel formulas. After a year, he put together a portfolio and landed an entry-level analytics job.
Daniel didn’t make a huge leap. He moved forward step by step, and those small steps changed his life.
“Big Moments” Is A Myth!
We all wait for big breaks; when someone notices our work, gives us a chance, or recognises our effort. But the truth is, those big moments are built on many small, often unnoticed steps.
The writer who publishes a bestselling book probably wrote every morning before work for years, of course.
The athlete who won gold kept showing up to practice, even on days he didn’t feel like it. The teacher whose students thrive spent many nights revising lesson plans.
These stories show that showing up, even when you don’t see results yet, is the secret most people miss.
Talent Gets You Started, Consistency Keeps You Going
Talent is like a spark; it gets things started. Consistency is the fuel that keeps the fire going. Talented people sometimes lose momentum because they rely on natural ability. I’ve seen average people reach great heights just by refusing to give up.
Consistency is quiet and not glamorous, but it adds up, like interest on an investment. The longer you stick with it, the more valuable your efforts become.
Progress Doesn’t Always Look Like Progress
Sometimes, growth looks like doing the same thing over and over. You might feel stuck, but you’re actually making your foundation stronger. You might think you’re going in circles, but you’re really moving upward in spirals.
That’s the thing about growth; it often hides in routine. If you feel unseen or unappreciated right now, remember that every effort counts, even the ones no one notices. Every email you send, every late night spent learning, every tough challenge you face is part of the process.
One Day, It Will Make Sense
One day, all those small steps will add up. You’ll look back and see how far you’ve come; not because you moved faster than others, but because you kept going when others stopped. That’s the quiet power of consistency. It doesn’t shout, it just wins.
Oh, consider this: What’s one small step you can take today, one brick you can lay that your future self will thank you for?
You don’t have to move fast; don’t just stop moving.
Until next time…
