From the moment I watched the explosive ash and lava crashing down onto the fictional town of Dante’s Peak I’ve been fascinated with volcanoes. Pierce Brosnan and none other than the gorgeous Linda Hamilton starred in the 1997 mega hit.
Most recently I watched Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari. This documentary however had me less fascinated and far more fearful. Several people lost their lives from the volcanic eruption in Whakaari, New Zealand.
The documentary shares details of the tragic loss of 22 people during the 2019 eruption.
However, the danger of volcanoes can often be masked by rich beauty and a false sense of security.
Mount Etna, Italy
Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna along with the town of Catania attracts tourists year round despite its danger which is highly monitored.

Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland
Known for its stunning white ice contrasting the black volcanic rock, Eyjafjallajökull is believed to be one of the most stunning volcanos on earth.
However the giant’s major eruption caused an entire grounding of flights over Europe and dangerous air quality for month.

Mount Vesuvius, Italy
This volcano destroyed Pompeii in 79AD and has become a major tourist attraction in Italy. It currently lays dormant however there is a risk of another eruption which would bring more devastation and loss.

Kilauea, Hawaii, USA
Visitors come from around the world to watch the magnificent lava show as it flows down the mountain into the ocean causing an explosion of steam. You can traipse over hardened lava and even see the glowing of the lava under the rich black rock.
If you’re thinking of visiting a volcano I would highly recommend Kilauea, on Hawaii’s Big Island.
It’s quite active though, as the latest eruption just happened two days ago. Maybe wait a while before Volcano hunting in Hawaii right now.

Yellowstone Supervolcano, USA
An eruption from this heavily monitored volcano could cause catastrophic amounts of ash and gases, potentially disrupting global climate.

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica
Towering over the town of La Fortuna, Arenal is a stunning volcano and probably my most favourite on the list. Still active, this volcano attracts visitors all year round.
I plan to visit the town of La Fortuna in the near future, but will admire Arenal from afar.
As beautiful and intriguing as volcanoes are, I like to keep my distance!
