Here is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the only people in Congress who considers herself accountable to everyone in her district. Not even convicts, incarcerated at Riker’s Island, have escaped her attention, leading her to champion essential prison reform.
She is a government official, concerned about accountability to constituents with no money and nothing to offer. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do.
Then, you read the thread and realize that its replete with people insulting her and telling her to go back to waitressing, insisting that she’s too young to know what she’s talking about. What’s even more frustrating is that not one single commenter presented anything of substance to counter her.
Rikers Island is in my district.
Due to Census law, people incarcerated at Rikers are counted as my constituents (instead of at their home community).
Changing policy is about changing how we treat people, & we have an obligation to hold our criminal justice system to account. https://t.co/S7WRYZBQ9g

More and more, every day, I am realizing that our job must be to have her back- her and others, who speak the truth to power. We can’t let people fill all the spaces with lies, insults, and fluff. We all have a responsibility for the issues.
She’s right. This is a big one.
