Fam,
This Black Feminisms Month, we’re highlighting Black women radicals who have made incredible contributions to the movement for liberation.
But first, what does Black Feminisms mean?
Black feminisms are philosophies, ideologies, practices, and frameworks for highlighting the distinct intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and their impact on Black women’s lives. Black feminisms challenges how institutions, policies, culture, and interpersonal relationships intersect and compound to uniquely and violently oppress Black women. We say feminisms with an “s” to acknowledge Black, queer, and transfeminist perspectives — feminisms let us celebrate our diversity and our shared experiences, too!
Basically, Black feminisms connect the dots, make it more possible for us to be our full selves, and leaves no one behind. For Black women, gender non-conforming, transgender, and intersex people, people with disabilities — and so many others — Black feminisms are life-affirming and lifesaving. Fed up with being erased, silenced, forgotten, and ignored, Black feminists developed a blueprint for how to build a non-capitalist, non-patriarchal, non-colonialist, and non-racist world.
Black feminist traditions are foundational to our social movements, inclusive policies, our revolutionary spirit, and true democracy. From divesting from police and investing in our communities, to significantly addressing the ongoing threat of climate change, to ending the scourge of sexual violence, Black feminisms and the Black feminists that came before us provide tools we can use to confront and interrupt power. Our Vision for Black Lives was built by the movement with Black feminisms at the forefront to allow us to imagine a future where all of us are free.
Stick with us throughout the month as we share highlights on powerful Black feminists who’ve all made an impact in the fight for liberation!
In solidarity,
Movement for Black Lives
