As automation and artificial intelligence rapidly transform our labor market, universal or unconditional basic income (UBI), which I have written about on several occasions, has emerged as a potential response to these socioeconomic challenges. The recent trial conducted by Germany’s Mein Grundeinkommen, which follows many other such initiatives around the world, provides illuminating data on UBI’s effects on people’s lives.
Between 2020 and 2023, 122 participants received €1,200 monthly with no conditions, while researchers compared their outcomes with a control group of 1,580 people. This study, supported by respected institutions including the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), examined UBI’s impact on employment, mental health, and self-determination.
The findings decisively challenge common myths about UBI.Contrary to fears that it discourages work, participants maintained approximately forty working hours weekly — comparable to the control group. More interestingly, UBI recipients showed greater willingness to change jobs or pursue additional training, suggesting an increased focus on personal fulfillment rather than simply maintaining employment.
Regarding wellbeing and mental health, beneficiaries reported substantial improvements in overall life satisfaction, saying they slept better and were less stressed. These positive effects even continued six months after payments ended, indicating lasting benefits beyond the financial support itself.
The experiment revealed that UBI strengthened participants’ sense of autonomy, especially among women, who experienced enhanced ability to make independent decisions and manage their time effectively. This finding challenges the paternalistic assumption that unconditional financial support leads to poor decision-making.
Financial behavior changed significantly among recipients. Not only did they improve their financial stability through increased saving, they also demonstrated greater altruism through donations and financial support for family and friends. Contrary to the skeptics’ predictions, the study found no significant changes in voting behavior, risk appetite, or procrastination compared to the control group.
As AI and robotics increasingly perform tasks once done by humans, we must reconsider how we distribute the wealth generated by these technologies. Many business leaders advocate for UBI as a solution to technological unemployment while ensuring equitable distribution of automation’s benefits. The German experiment provides empirical evidence that UBI can significantly enhance individual wellbeing without reducing labor participation.
The near future will bring increased automation, generating unprecedented production surpluses, and UBI is a viable tool for maintaining both economic and social stability. The German experiment exposes common myths about UBI recipients — that they would abandon work, become lazy, lose motivation, or engage in unproductive activities — as falsehoods that should not influence policy decisions.
Policymakers must consider these experimental findings when designing responses to the digital age’s challenges. Current subsidy systems could evolve toward a genuine UBI for the entire population, where those who don’t need it simply return benefits through taxation. Such a system would eliminate stigma, prevent political manipulation, and prove significantly easier to administer than our current patchwork of social programs.
