January is all about restarting and resetting. As you’re setting your New Year’s resolutions, the last thing on your mind is the fact that your partner might have an affair.
But as it turns out, January is the most common month to get cheated on. Let’s take a closer look at the statistics and why January is the #1 month people cheat.
The Data Behind the Claims
No scientific research indicates that January is the most common time of the year to cheat. However, data from a website called Gleeden shows that cheating is more common in January. The European dating site caters to people who are seeking affairs. (Think the European version of Ashley Madison).
Gleeden reportedly sees a significant spike in new sign-ups in early to mid-January. Back in 2016, they reported a more than 320% increase in registrations compared to any other day of the year.
The date changes each year. In 2026, for example, January 12th is the day when the highest number of people will be looking to have an affair.
Reasons Why January is the #1 Month to Cheat
There are a few possible theories for why more affairs may begin in January than during any other time of the year.
1. Post-Holiday Stress and Burnout
Holiday celebrations with family and budgeting for Christmas gifts can lead to stress and exhaustion. It can be an intense time, so it’s not surprising that many of us feel burnt out. Some of us might even find ourselves questioning if we want to be with our partners once the holidays are over.
This can lead some to have a wandering eye. Before you know it, your partner is in a full-blown affair before you’ve even had a chance to put away the Christmas ornaments.
2. New Year, Fresh Start
Many of us want a fresh start and a new beginning during the New Year. While some of us take to the gym and create new meal plans, others reevaluate their relationships. Instead of ending things, they decide to explore what’s out there to see if they can find someone else who can offer them a newfound sense of excitement and thrill.
3. Return to Regular Routine
The holidays can feel like a magical time for couples. But once the mistletoe is taken down and there are no more horse-drawn carriage rides left to take, life together can begin to feel mundane again. You’ll return to your old routine, which can lead some to remember how unsatisfying their relationship actually is.
The Bottom Line
While cheating is more common in January, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your partner will cheat on you. That being said, it might be worth paying attention to your partner’s behavior, especially if things feel off in your relationship. Your gut instinct is almost always right when it comes to cheating.
If you’re questioning whether your partner is cheating, it might be time to reevaluate the relationship. You deserve a relationship where you feel loved, safe, and secure — not a relationship that leaves you questioning your worth.
