Right now, at this time in history, so many people are complaining that they aren’t allowed to be a man anymore, that there is some kind of war on men.
I’ve been male my whole life. And I’ve been a feminist. There is this myth that feminism hates men. It’s not true.
Feminism hates it when men are so insecure about their strength that they use it to hurt and restrict other people. At times in history, that has been an overwhelmingly large number of men. It is now.
I would urge other men—when they hear things that seem disparaging to men in general—to dig a little deeper. This is not a war against men, it’s a war against the kind of masculinity that is visibly toxic.
The kind of masculinity that is healthy and real, joyful, so secure in its own strength that it doesn’t focus on it, instead focusing on making sure other people are strong, too, that kind will always be celebrated, no matter where it comes from.
The kind that doesn’t dismiss, that holds other people up. That kind is welcome by everyone.
It is a good time now to evaluate again what it means to be a man.
