In my world, Saturday Mornings from 1977-1984 cartoons more or less centered on the Superfriends and their teen alien sidekicks Zan and Jayna. And their annoying purple monkey Gleek.
I’m sure many bowls of cereal were eaten as I watched the teen twins from the planet Exxor display their unique powers alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and whoever else was hanging around that particular week. Robin was usually there and so was Aquaman, but other than that, you were just happy with who you got.
I mentioned in the last paragraph that they had unique powers, and
I mean what if they were out helping Aquaman? Jayna could transform into a whale and let Aquaman control her, but what about Zan? More water? Ice in case anyone’s looking for a nice refreshing glass of ocean water as they battle Black Manta and the Legion of Doom?
He would be good in a chase, since when he transforms into water, it’s in a bucket, which Jayna, as a bird, can carry, then dump in front of the guy they’re chasing and let Zan transform into ice, knockin’ the bad guy on his butt.
I dig the Twins, but somehow Zan has to go through Exxorian puberty and get his real power. If the creative people over at DC need some ideas, I have a couple.
But on to the comic book.
The Twins are new students at Morris High School and have part-time jobs at the Hall of Justice. Staunch comic book fans may not appreciate the mild pokes at the DC Universe, but this is light-hearted in a what that puts a joke on almost every page.
It’s fun in a John Hughes teen comedy kind of way (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Breakfast Club). Heck, the normally brooding Batman even talks about a high school story.
All in all, this six-issue series looks to be a fun trip down memory lane for those of us over 40 and will be a fun read for everyone, no matter your age.
