“I would start if I had more time.”
It’s a sentence I’ve heard so many times.
I’ve said it myself, yes.
More time to write that book.
More time to start that business.
More time to learn a new skill.
More time to exercise.
More time to call the people we love.
Yet somehow, when more time appears, we often find new reasons not to begin. If you’re honest with yourself, you would tell me right now this struck a cord. please do!
That realization hit me hard one evening as I sat scrolling through my phone after spending an entire day telling myself I was “too busy” to work on something important.
The uncomfortable truth wasn’t that I lacked time, not at all!
The truth was that I had chosen comfort over commitment.
There are ofcourse, so many reason we often give for this but are they real or, are they just “excuses” still?
Well, let’s look at some of these reasons.
The Myth of “When Things Settle Down”
Many of us live as though life is about to become easier.
We tell ourselves:
“I’ll focus on my goals when work slows down.”
“I’ll pursue my dream when the kids are older.”
“I’ll start saving when I earn more money.”
“I’ll write that book when I have a free weekend.”
However, life rarely settles down, does it?
There is always another responsibility waiting around the corner.
Another bill, deadline or unexpected challenge.
If we wait for the perfect moment, we may spend our entire lives waiting.
Life isn’t a series of obstacles that eventually disappear, it is the obstacle course.
There will always be something demanding our attention.
The people who eventually achieve their goals aren’t necessarily those with fewer responsibilities.
They’re often the ones who decide to begin anyway.
The Excuses We Don’t Like to Admit
Most excuses aren’t really about time.
They’re about fear.
Fear of failure.
Fear of looking foolish.
Fear that we’ll try our hardest and still fall short.
Time becomes the socially acceptable explanation.
It’s easier to say, “I’m too busy” than to say, “I’m scared.”
It’s easier to blame the clock than to confront our doubts.
I learned this when I left home, my comfort zone.
Starting over in a new country wasn’t easy at all. There were language barriers, cultural differences, financial pressures, and moments of uncertainty.
If I had waited until I felt fully prepared, I might never have taken the leap.
Growth rarely arrives when we’re comfortable, no.
It arrives when we decide to move forward despite discomfort.
Twenty-Four Hours For Us All!
One of the most humbling facts about life is that every person gets the same twenty-four hours each day.
Consider;
The entrepreneur building a company.
The athlete training for a competition.
The writer finishing a manuscript.
The student pursuing a degree.
None of these people were given extra hours, no.
The difference often lies in what they prioritize.
This doesn’t mean everyone starts from the same circumstances. Some people carry heavier burdens than others.
However, within our circumstances, we still make choices every day.
Five minutes scrolling social media or, five minutes reading.
Thirty minutes watching another episode or, thirty minutes working on a goal.
Small choices repeated consistently shape our future far more than dramatic bursts of motivation.
The life we dream about is often built in ordinary moments.
Not in very big gestures.
Not in perfect conditions but in the every decision, even the smallest ones we make daily.
The Trap of Waiting to Feel Ready
Many people believe successful individuals are more talented, more confident, or more disciplined.
Often, they’re simply more willing to start before they feel ready.
They don’t wait until everything is perfect.
They just, begin.
They make mistakes, learn and improve.
Then eventually, what once seemed impossible becomes part of their story.
The first draft is messy.
The first video is awkward.
The first business idea is imperfect.
The first step is always uncertain.
But, perfection has delayed more dreams than failure ever has.
You do not need permission to begin.
You only need the courage to be a beginner.
Delay Is Very Costly!
Years from now, most of us won’t regret the risks we took.
We’ll regret the opportunities we never pursued because we kept postponing them.
The business idea that stayed in a notebook.
The conversation we never had.
The dream we never gave a chance.
The life we never attempted to build.
Time doesn’t stop moving simply because we aren’t moving with it, not at all.
One day, we’ll wake up and realize that the future we’ve been waiting for has quietly become our past and that realization can be heartbreaking.
A Better Question to Ask
So perhaps the question isn’t:
“Do I have enough time?”
Perhaps the better question is:
“What excuse am I holding onto that I need to let go of?”
You see, sometimes the biggest obstacle between us and our future isn’t time.
It’s the story we’ve been telling ourselves about why we can’t begin and today might be just the perfect day to stop telling that story.
So;
You don’t need another Monday.
You don’t need another New Year.
You don’t need another motivational video.
You don’t even need perfect circumstances.
You need a decision.
The reason is, the life you want is rarely built by people who had more time.
It’s built by people who stopped waiting.
My question today is;
What’s one thing you’ve been postponing because you’re waiting for the “right time”?
Share it in the comments please. You might just inspire someone else to start today.
