Make Magazine held a “Cool Tools” competition where contestants could submit their own DIY inventions, and here’s the winner: Hand Lights!
These handy little lights are the brainchild of Steve Hoefer, who explained his reasoning:
“Head mounted lights light your work, but they only put light where you point your head. And when your viewpoint and your lighting are close together everything appears flat with little or no shadow.”
In contrast, these lights provide multi-directional lighting that doesn’t require you to strain your neck to get a little illumination. You can even make it yourself by following these instructions.

- Direct neighborhood traffic at night.
