One mother turns her love of children’s drawing into handcrafted art.
How sweet would it be to have a stuffed version of your child’s favorite drawing? You know, the one that you see every time you go to the fridge, with the lopsided smile and one giant eye. A stuffed toy designed for your child, by your child and hand crafted just for them. One woman, Wendy Tsao decided to do just that for her son, and in 2007 the first “softie” was born. Tsao is the creator of Child’s Own Studio, a web based business that turns children’s drawings into stuffed toys. For Tsao though, it is more than just about selling a product for profit. She says,
Child’s Own Studio is not just a business for me; it’s really a craft. On some days, when I’m good, it’s an art form. And that’s where I want to be. Making good art.
What every parent knows, and none want to admit, is that kids grow up, and those half-recognizable scrawls represent a brief stage in their development. It’s downright sweet that someone’s gone into business stitching that stage into physical form.
