Eli Kaplan asserts that almost everyone he knows is prejudiced. And he knows a lot of people.
So, ABC’s The Bachelor show is being sued for being racist. Hmmm…
Why is this a shock? Most people are prejudiced, and thus most corporations, companies, etc… are prejudiced. Whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Muslims, rich, poor, dumb, smart—all sorts of people are prejudiced.
Most of us wish to be good people, and we understand prejudice (or even worse, racism) is bad. Many of us even act and speak out (sincerely) against discriminatory behavior. But those good talks and actions don’t erase our inner-most thoughts. And the sad truth is, most people are prejudice, and our society is racist.
Does “The Bachelor” appeal to a lilly-white audience? Of course it does. It’s a show on ABC! Have you watched ABC recently? This is no big surprise. If you don’t want to watch all those white people make fools of themselves, you can change the channel. By doing so, you’ll be making an active decision to not support the ABC/The Bachelor agenda. Instead, turn your TV to VH1, and you can see minorities make complete fools of themselves on Basketball Wives.
Is one show more (or less) worthwhile than the other? In my eyes they’re both abominations. Networks are equal opportunists when it comes to creating trash.
People aren’t nearly as liberal or open-minded as they like to pretend they are. Isn’t it a contestant’s prerogative to ask for a cast full of non-minorities? If he’s not interested in marrying anyone who isn’t white, that’s his decision. It’s not my personal choice, but it can certainly be his. We are a segregated society and world. People stick mostly with their own race in all facets of life – school, business, socially, romantically, and in prison too. So let’s have a minority be the next “bachelor”. When that contestant is black, will everyone complain that mostly the whole cast is black? When that contestant is Asian, and the cast is mostly Asian? When that contestant is gay, will everyone complain that the entire cast is… gay?!? Or will ABC buck stereotypes and create an interracial cast?
Come on America, cool it with the complaints (about anything)! It’s true, complaints bring attention, attention brings awareness, and awareness can bring change. But we have to pick our battles, or our voice loses its power. Believe me, there are other racial injustices we can fight against. Have you been watching the news or reading the newspapers lately?
But for now, take it easy with the class-action lawsuits. We’re talking trashy TV shows here. We’re talking reality shows, not reality. If you wanted to get really real, you REALLY wouldn’t like what you saw. The shows would be full of real discriminatory banter—they’d be un-airable—because this nation is prejudiced. Instead we create a fake “reality” and pretend that’s how the world actually is.
And if that’s what you want, keep living that lie.

Here’s another reason why there aren’t much minorities on that show. Most minorities have a tendency to meet their partners through their families rather than out. That includes African Americans too. They have strong family ties while Whites don’t.

Relying on your instanct is tough for most of us. Many of us develop this ability over the course of our life. It doesnt really just happen if you know what I mean….
Somehow I agree, why are there no asians or brown or black as the bachelor????? i just want to know why?!
The argument “You don’t want to be a part of that line up anyway” — I’m paraphrasing, of course — doesn’t address the underlying unfairness in what has rightly been called the Romantic Industrial Complex…which includes reality shows like “The Bachelor/Bachelorette.” It is irritating to see that segregation continues to be reflected in popular culture vehicles like those shows compared to shows that are equally insipid with fewer viewers like “For the Love of Ray J” or “Flavor of Love,” in which the premise of the show was more about playing into stereotypes of black men as virile studs (even… Read more »
Oh screw The Bachelor(ette) anyway. A much better question (IMHO) is why are there no minority professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars? (excepting Cheryl Burke, who is half Filipino)
Never seen the term “racist” used correctly once on the Internet (except by me, when correcting others who have abused it)…and this article is no exception. Discrimination is nothing but fancy lawyer talk – the word itself means the act of choosing or differentiating between multiple things. Anytime you make a choice , you discriminate. Should I have a salad or a sandwich for lunch? I feel like a salad. I just discriminated against sandwiches. I’m prejudiced against carbohydrates. Whatever. Lawyers and the minority grievance groups they glom onto to, have learned to twist words into evil sounding things. And… Read more »

Discrimination is nothing but fancy lawyer talk – the word itself means the act of choosing or differentiating between multiple things. Hahaha, oh man… I love it when people contradict themselves in two sentences or less. Please, share your veritable cornucopia of wisdom regarding racism! Anyhoo, on a serious note: discrimination is actually more than “lawyer talk”. Do you remember something called the Civil Rights movement? The Equal Protection clause of the Constitution?… Read more »
Moderator,
I apologize. Where was I using a personal attack? I was, admittedly, condescending, because he was being dishonest. But I didn’t see a personal attack. However, you say there was one so I’ll trust your judgement, and again I apologize.
The whiteness of the contestants is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s not even a real cross-section of white people! How many of the bachelors have been out of shape or had hairy bodies or are working class or pierced or disabled or bald or…. There appears to be a minimum chest size for both the male and female contestants – minimum pec size for one, minimum cup size for the other. Any bachelors or male contestants who are at all androgynous? How many of the women have been flat-chested or anywhere close to being plus-sized? How many with… Read more »

I’m not sure that the argument, “hey there’s are other problems out there we should be focusing on instead of this one!” is something you really want to advocate. You think there are better uses of “our voice”? Okay, great, but the… Read more »
Zek, Let me help you out here. You wrote: “Um, suing someone for discrimination is NOT THE SAME THING as frivolous lawsuits. The insinuation that they are is disingenuous at best, and completely dishonest at worst.” In this instance, you are completely wrong. Courts in this country can provide two kinds of relief: money and “equitable” relief. If this is about money relief, it’s already a joke. How much money should ABC pay to someone who REALLY wanted to see The Bachelor have a black contestant? Can you honestly say you are financially worse off for having not gotten to… Read more »
Mike, Courts in this country can provide two kinds of relief: money and “equitable” relief. … What kind of activity should they get ordered to do? Put a black guy on the show? And this will REALLY benefit the person bringing the suit? Wow, let me guess: Brown v. Board of Education was frivolous too, right? Because apparently according to you litigating for access to equal opportunity is a frivolous lawsuit. In order for such relief to benefit the person bringing the suit, we would need to believe that they are an avid fan of The Bachelor, watching it regularly,… Read more »
Im just not convinced this is a legitimate case of racial discrimination. What’s next, blacks suing other races of women who won’t date them? Suing eharmony and all these dating sites because they don’t get any responses from white women? Please. People have the right to freely associate. And if they don’t want you on their show, for whatever reason, they have the right to make those choices.
That should be the end of the story…but of course Statists and grievance groups (blacks) see an opening for a lawsuit. Gotta get paid, right?

People have the right to freely associate. And if they don’t want you on their show, for whatever reason, they have the right to make those choices. Seriously, slippery slope fallacy AND false dichotomy? Eliminating discrimination does not lead to the elimination of the freedom to associate. Moreover, discrimination is NOT THE SAME as association. You really need to study up on the subject. However your point about eHarmony is interesting,… Read more »
completely agree. The Bachelor/Bachelorette has been on TV for over 10 years sticking to the same formula, and now a few people want to complain? Your basketball wives comparison is spot on; especially since when you look on twitter around when the Bachelor comes on; just look at the tweets by black people. It’s mostly about basketball wives or Atlanta housewives. There are better battles to pick, like Girls for instance. It’s in Brooklyn and the women aren’t supposed to be super rich. You can’t tell me you can’t have contacts with a few non-white people in that situation, unless… Read more »
I’ve never heard of Girls…but frankly any television show set in New York that doesn’t have any non-white people in it better be set in like, a specific regional neighbourhood or something.
