See, these are what funny rape jokes are like. Dark, ugly and all about exposing what a bullshit, abusive culture (or rather, world) we live in, for rape victims/survivors–this is how you tell a rape joke without making it about mocking people simply because they’ve been through horrible trauma. I think or make comments like this, about rape all the time–I was especially struck by when said, “You can rape it or protect it…” when pointing to her body. I know I’m killing this joke by analyzing it but that is really the world women live in and jokes like… Read more »

Dang, can’t see it from my current computer…. and I’ve always liked Bee, especially on the Daily Show. I’ll try later with another browser.
She’s parodying the idea that men are so weak they are incapable of controlling themselves. Basically the Myth of Male Weakness played out, that she’s so sexy that men can’t help but rape/ogle/protect her… I get what she’s doing and it is funny-ish, the problem is always that it seems like she’s making fun of women – but there’s a more nuanced thing here that makes fun of society. But a LOT of men are going to watch that and think “Yeah, women DO sell us short, women DO think we’re so stupid we can’t control ourselves!” It was a… Read more »
She is indeed parodying Santorum and Trotta’s stances, that there is only one choice with men-they’ll protect you or assault you. Stewart of course, offers the actual alternative, that men are quite capable of treating other people (in this case women) like people and respecting them. Anyone thinking that Bee was actually positing that men can’t control themselves has apparently never seen Jon Stewart before, for this particular kind of set up is common. And yeah I don’t think they’re making fun of men (or women); they’re commenting on Santorum and Trotta and how ridiculous either of their statements were. And…soooo funny. 🙂

I fell out of my chair laughing so hard. Sometimes you get to the truth by pretending to be serious when you are not.
So, anyone care to fill me in if her comments on rape in the military will be triggering to someone who has a problem with gendering sexual abuse?
