Philadelphia’s citizens, teachers and students are fighting to save their public school system. And they’re not backing down.
According to a video-article posted on Upworthy, the School Reform Commission is “a five-member unelected panel that has run Philadelphia’s schools since 2001.” And, without asking the opinion of anyone outside their committee, the SRC voted to close 23 of Philadelphia’s public schools due to lack of funding.
Outrage is pretty much a cheap understatement when it comes to the reaction of those affected by the decision.
The above video is just shy of six minutes—watch it. I promise you this won’t be the last of these types of decisions. And hopefully, this won’t be the last of these types of reactions.
I’m sorry, but, as a Philadelphian who reads behind the headlines, these people are NOT fighting for their schools, they’re fighting to keep their individual buildings. let the budget cuts come from somewhere else. The school district had to borrow 500 million to stay afloat for the rest of this year. We have far too many buildings for the amount of students attending. We have an unelected School Reform Commission because, for decades, we elected corrupt school boards.
