We are approaching the end of the year. Many people set New Year’s resolutions with the hopes of being successful. Unfortunately, many people have failed by the beginning of February.
While the New Year seems like a good time to start over, we shouldn’t wait until the New Year to reach for the stars. Some people say dream big. Other people suggest creating SMART goals. Who is right? Perhaps, they are both right.
Everyone has different aspirations and motivations. This realization has led me to create the 3M Metric. Most people set goals on a pass or fail model. Instead, I suggest that people set goals on a parallel model. With parallel goals, you have a better chance of being successful.
There are 3 Ms in the 3M Metric. The first M represents the minimum goal. It’s the goal that you can believe that you can achieve without a doubt. The second M represents the moderate goal. It’s the goal that you believe that it’s realistic enough for you to achieve. The third M represents the maximum goal. It’s the goal that would shock you if you achieved it.
The advantage of the 3M Metric is meeting only one out of the three goal metrics. With the 3M Metric, you triple your chances of achieving your goals.
For example, you may choose to lose 30 pounds within the next three months. If we apply the 3M Metric to weight loss, we would take the goal, 30 pounds, and apply the three metrics.
So, the minimal goal would be losing 30 pounds in three months. The moderate goal would be losing 30 pounds in two months. The maximum goal would be losing 30 pounds in one month. With the 3M Metric, your chances of success are higher than setting a single goal to lose 30 pounds in one month (i.e. pass or fail goal).
