Sometimes, you’re so caught up in life that months and years travel at the speed of light. A year later, you may have a self-conscious moment that you’re 38 years old and you’re still working at Walmart.
Honestly, I don’t miss working at Walmart during college. Although, I was grateful to have a job. I could have been unemployed.
There are those self-conscious moments when you realize that you can do better with your life. Unfortunately, some people are so busy that they don’t have self-conscious moments.
I noticed that I have been experiencing more self-conscious moments in my third decade of life. I suppose that it’s normal. As I get older, I’m analyzing the current state of my life to evaluate my level of happiness and whether there’s room for improvement.
Sometimes, I wake up with an abundant amount of inspiration and confidence. Sometimes, I wake up and don’t want to be productive at all. These are normal behaviors, but too much of one behavior can be destructive.
Some people will tell you to take the conventional route, which is getting a college degree and working for forty years. Unfortunately, that route will ensure that many people will die before retirement. Generation Zers will probably have to work until 70 to get a full retirement pension.
Some people will tell you to work hard now to retire early. Although, have you considered the possibility that you can die before you reach that early retirement?
There are other alternatives like taking a year off for every four years of work. In total, you could have about 8 one year sabbaticals to study something new, live abroad, volunteer for an organization, or do something entirely different.
Furthermore, it’s important that we become more self-conscious and maximize every moment of our life. Whatever happens after this life is a good hypothesis at best. Certainly, there are afterlife theories, but the fact is that we only have the present moment.
