I’m sure this is not news to you, but life does not always run smoothly, no matter who you are or what it might look like to someone else. There are tremendous successes and wonderful highs, but there are also setbacks and obstacles, even failures. When life shows you a setback, how do you react? Your reaction to those temporary conditions determines whether we are able to move forward and continue to fulfill our purpose or whether we stagnate, shut down, and abandon our dreams and give us our vision.
Tiger Woods is an excellent example of someone who has not abandoned his dreams, even in the face of obstacles: his health has been compromised, his marriage dissolved and his questionable behavior exposed. His golf has been affected by all these things. Still, he continues to work on his skills and has even attempted a few tournaments to assess his progress. I imagine that in his continued progress to regain #1, he employs a few principles we can all benefit from:
1. Review previous successes. How did you reach your success? What steps did you take to reach your goals?
2. Review the circumstances that went into this setback.
3. Retell yourself a different story than the one most recently experienced.
4. Remember WHO you are. It’s too easy to forget who you are when you are struggling with disappointment.
5. Re-do the work that help you achieve your initial success.
6. Remember what it felt like to win. The affixing should be relived each time you are feeling challenged.
7. Most importantly, give up the pity party! Sure, you are human and you should acknowledge your feelings but do not wallow in them.
In short, a reboot is what you need. You succeeded before, your model for success already exists. You just need to refocus and replicate it.
Yes, I realize that it is very often easier said than done and setbacks can weigh heavily. Yet, you must persevere; you must work through the pain of disappointment. Pull on your religious strength if that is what sustains you in times of distress.
“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.
