Whether it is work, exercise, endless errands, or responsibilities, our daily life always keeps us busy. All these actions take their toll on our skin as well. The sun, dirt, dust, frost and other factors such as environmental pollution and smoking are harmful to our skin and require proper care.
When it comes to a skincare routine, men have traditionally kept it simple. It is a common mistake to think that men do not need to take care of their skin as much as women do, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. However, with more men now looking to make their skin healthier and younger, now is a perfect time for men to evaluate their skincare ritual and learn more about how to take care of the largest organ in their body. Here are six simple skincare tips for healthy, manly skin!
Cleanse Daily
One of the first critical steps to an effective skincare routine is a face wash. The facial skin of men naturally produces more oily substances (sebum) onto the surface of the face than the skin of women. Throughout the day, especially in summer, without proper cleaning, the oil, sweat, dead skin cells and dirt remain on the face. From the outside, the face will look greasy, dull and unclean. In addition, these unwanted substances on the skin can cause irritation and upset the pH balance of the face, which leads to dry skin, redness (blemishes) and acne. While a natural facial oil on the skin is not bad at all, a good amount of it gives a healthy and radiant look, so a gentle wash is enough to cleanse your face.
Make sure to cleanse your face daily and after exercise to remove dirt, skin oil and bacteria that might have collected on your skin during the day or overnight. Choose a mild facial cleanser and wash your face with lukewarm water, but avoid any products containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is an aggressive detergent that irritates and dries out the skin.
Keep Your Skin Moisturised
If you don’t want your face to look and feel like sandpaper, you need to moisturize it. It is a vital key to achieving supple, soft and healthy skin.
Remember that by cleansing your skin, you are removing all the natural and beneficial moisture your body produces. It is very important to replenish this lost supply because otherwise, you will start to face things like dry, dull and sensitive skin.
You should apply moisturizers at least once in the morning and once at night on a clean, washed face as well as on the neck. Look for face creams that are paraben-free, as research has shown parabens are linked to skin cancer and a decrease in sperm count.
Try Out CBD Oil
While most users are typically using CBD oil for anxiety, it might be a good idea to incorporate CBD oil into your skincare too! Being the largest and fastest-growing organ of the human body, your skin covers all the body and has a high concentration of cannabinoid receptors as a part of the complex endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD is known to support ECS and interfere with special receptors to relieve pain and inflammation, regulate sebum, production of bacteria and lipid and release of histamine. Also, CBD oil possesses moisturizing properties and is suitable for all types of skin, making it perfect for preventing dryness, decreasing oily skin and helping to reduce acne, psoriasis, eczema and many other skin issues.
Exfoliate Your Skin
When you exfoliate, you help your skin to remove the accumulated dead skin cells and debris from your body. By promoting the normal rate of skin cell renewal, your skin will become less dry and cleaner. Not to mention, it also helps unclog pores, which can cause breakouts and plays a vital role in preventing ingrown hairs while shaving.
Typically, for most men with oily skin, using men’s face scrub twice a week will be enough to help slough off dead cells of the skin and keep your skin youthful and healthy. However, men with dry skin should only do exfoliation once a week.
Don’t Forget About Sunscreen
While the sun is beneficial in a healthy dosage and provides vitamin D needed for strong and healthy bones, excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays ages your skin more rapidly. It can cause eye damage, suppression of the immune system, skin damage and even skin cancer.
The best method to prevent the early signs of aging like wrinkles and protect yourself from sunlight is wearing sunscreen. So, before going outdoors, make sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin, including your scalp, ears, lips and neck. For better protection, use a broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen that is rated SPF 30 or higher and reapply the product every two hours after swimming or sweating. Also, you can protect your skin by seeking shade and wearing sunglasses with UV protection and sun-protective clothing such as a light long-sleeved shirt, pants and wide-brimmed hat whenever possible. For more effective sun protection, choose clothing that has an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) label.
Stick To Healthy Choices
It is essential to remember that the core of looking and feeling good always starts from the inside. Therefore, consider drinking plenty of water, skip the sugary treats and get some shuteye – all of which is known to affect your skin condition. We all know that drinking at least eight glasses of water per day and seven to nine hours of quality night’s sleep is the minimal requirement to maintain a healthy look. It’s time to focus on sustaining a well-balanced diet, getting a better night’s sleep and drinking enough water throughout the day to achieve clearer and glowing skin.
