Not everything in life goes the way we want it to. In my own experience, I would say that it almost never does. The bus is late when you have to make a connection, your cell battery dies when you are trying to get directions, or your paycheck did not deposit when it was supposed to. Each of these could set off a chain reaction of problems. I tend to think that these things happen when I already have a full plate. Really, it probably just seems like that because a little setback when nothing else is happening just gets forgotten.
‘It’s not a big deal’ is the worst thing that anyone could ever say in one of these moments. I would be lying if I said I did not become annoyed at anyone who has tried to say that to me. Truthfully though, there are not many things that are big deals. And it turns out that telling it to myself is not as annoying as someone else saying it to me. This internal reminder along with a deep breath is always helpful in keeping things in perspective.
I don’t ever want to have to deal with setbacks, or interruptions or problem solving a new set of issues. Thinking about how little I want to be doing it has never provided any helpful solutions are taken care of any problems. I still dwell in this thought process for longer than I would like to admit. Acknowledging that it isn’t what I want to put my energy into but accepting that I don’t have a choice is the only way I’ve found to move forward and begin to handle whatever hasn’t gone quite to plan.
