In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
- "Is That You God?," Goodie Mob
(available for free in this week's #musicmonday column)
One of my favorite groups of the 90s has returned with some flavor very similar to what they what were introduced with. Goodie Mob always had a way of expressing themselves with a since of pride and soul. I'm glad to see them back together and still repping that down to earth formula. Welcome back brothers.
- "Rock N iT," MC Melodee feat. Feliciana
(available for free in this week's #musicmonday column)
How many of y'all love that classic boom bap ish? Here it is with a millennium twist. MC Melodee got it going on with this one. I can't lie, I'm a sucka for female MCs especially when they maintain their femininity. I don't need to hear female thugs with mics. The fellas are holding that down.
- "Ain't That Peculiar," Oddisee
Another smash from my boy. Not my boy as in some guy I know but as in someone I've become a fan of in the past year. My boy, as in someone that keeps popping up in my column. This tune "Ain't That Peculiar" is from his latest EP of remixes, Odd Renditions. For your listening pleasure I will give you the link.
- "Do What I Gotta Do," Angie Stone
Alright, alright! Heare we go with a joint from the momma of neo soul. I call here that cause she's a mother and she has a motherly soul on beats. I can dig that. Trust I know I'm not introducing you to Ms. Stone but I think you you can get your grown on all the same.
- "This Can't Be A Crime," Cocaine 80s
(available for free in this week's #musicmonday column)
I love the way some artists combine sounds and genres now a days. Cocaine 80s has done just that with this one as they confess their love over this fused beat. I have never heard of Cocaine 80s except but I caught wind of two new one and I chose "This Can't Be a Crime" over "Queen To Be." When you get a minute, peep it.
In addition to checking out me out tonight at Da Poetry Lounge, check me out this Saturday night at Skinny's Lounge with my boy DJ Alwayz. We will be spinning all of your favorite throwback hits form the 80's and 90's while sprinkling in some of today's club bangers to keep you current.
