In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
- "Flaudgin," Stik Figa
This is some new vocabulary. Maybe just some new Kansas vocabulary. Either way, Stik Figa has a down to earth humorous approach on this track. Hip hop music having fun, I'm about that. This track is so well produced too. Peep the strings!
- "Rock The Party," Chuuwee
This cat Chuuwee must have at his ol' school flow muscle cereal before recording this one. For those of you familiar, this rhyme is reminiscent of a Big Daddy Kane. I love it when new generation pays homage to the old school. It shows respect. Plus he made me feel like I was watching a 90's episode of Yo! MTV Raps. Ahhhh, the memories.
- "Put Jewels On It," Wais P feat. Roc Marciano
Beats, Rhymes and Cuts! This is the formula for ill underground hip hop production. Statik Selectah laced this beat, giving it that authentic headbanger feel. Get a little dingy with this one!
- "Revolution Girls" (Super Gauchin Remix), Mariachi El Bronx
You ever hear a song and wonder what it would sound like remixed or slightly funked up? I did when I heard this one from Mariachi El Bronx. The original didn't have the drums under it that gave it that street sound. When I heard the remix, that's when I knew I could ride around in my car with it. You could do the same. Your speakers would appreciate you.
- "Art Of Stuntin,'" Def Sound
Peep the latest from a pal of mine. Def Sound has been grinding away and representing hip hop on some true artistry. "Art Of Stuntin'" is accompanied by a video which really allows you into the mind of Def Sound. That is where you can better understand the bars dude lays across the canvas that is a beat.
