After three and a half hours of sweaty men tackling each other for a chance at glory, Fox’s hit program Glee tried to retain the man-mentum with some smoking boob action—literally.
Co-creator/executive producer Brad Falchuk:
We put stuff in there understanding that there are a lot of dudes who watch the Super Bowl … It was making sure that the dudes who refuse to watch Glee are like ‘Wait a second!’
The episode started strong, opening up with cheerleaders in Katy Perry fire cones and continued with a football-centric plot to harmonize a disjointed football team—literally and figuratively—to win the championship game. It had all the elements for the male sports fan: fist fights, pretty girls, and a motivating halftime locker room speech that ultimately led the team to victory.
But was it enough? Or did the show’s vocal adrenaline, kitschy costumes, and fancy footwork fumble its way to defeat?
Dudes do NOT watch Glee. Boobs or no boobs.
My name is Aaron. I’m a heterosexual male. And I love Glee. I was a three-sport-a-year athlete in high school. But I also played two instruments and sang in the chorus. And even though I’m not religious at all, I was a prominent male member of the church choir because my grandmother was the choir director. Not to mention (and boy will I regret admitting this one) I was paid to sing in a professional boys soprano choir when I was a little kid. I enjoy watching the (mostly) realistic portrayal of merging the different cliques, especially when it comes… Read more »
I’m a guy and I watch Glee. Most likely because I was a nerd back then, I’m sure. I would say that this clip will, as many other clips from Glee have, get negative feedback about the over sexualization of under age girls. Take the time to watch Glee. The experiences portrayed ring true for many people’s memories of high school. I don’t think that the bad rap for sexuality that this show seems to be getting is deserved when viewed in context. Besides, weren’t we all a bit over sexualized when we were in school 🙂
More sex-negative puritanism. High-school kids are sexual.
…I think that is what he just said.
yep, I was agreeing =)
Wait, I’m not supposed to like Glee for the sum of its parts? Does the fact that I’m Team Kurt mean I’m not as manly as I’m supposed to be? Drat! Anyhow, the clip was too dark– was it that dark when it aired? I assume so the fire would show up?
It’s hard for a lot of people—men and women—to get past the whole glorified Kidz Bop aspect of the show. Up until a couple of months ago, I was one of them. You have to admit, there are a lot of elements that could (and has) detracted a male viewership, which the creators have noticed. But watching Glee does not make any guy any less of a “manly man.”
And yes, it was just as dark on my TV at home.
Yeah, I just watched the episode last night; why was it so dark during both of the big numbers– heck, even the Zombies song? Weird directing. The Kidz Bop angle is ALSO weird to me…I guess I just can’t understand that people wouldn’t recognize the degree of self parody going on? The show knows that the premise is ridiculous; complaining about that premise just seems like viewers are missing the point.
KidsBop, really? I thought Glee came to be because of the success of Disney’s High School Musical. Glee is a more “realistic” non-Disneyesque view of the high school drama club.
