This year has a lot in store for us. We’ll get to enjoy some pretty crazy solar flares, Estonia’s joining the European Union, and, of course, we’re all supposed to die sometime in May. (Pencil it in.)
But as National Geographic illustrates in this brilliant video, this is also the year that the human population is expected to hit 7 billion people—a number that puts the 1800s’ measly 1 billion to shame. (To put it into context, it would take 200 years just to count to 7 billion out loud.)
The video also highlights how alarmingly fast our population is growing as a whole. Exponentially faster than it was a century ago … or even a few decades ago. We won’t ruin the rest of it. Just watch and learn.
