Did you know that your Apple laptop battery has a password? Yup. Apparently, all Apple laptop batteries have the same password, because Apple never changed the default. Why should you care? Well, hackers can use the password, which is on the Texas Instruments website to make your beloved MacBook Pro catch fire in your lap. Listening now, huh?
The password is on a chip that controls your battery's temperature. Someone with the password can remotely control your battery, install malware, or cause it to overheat. The glitch was discovered by Charlie Miller, principal research consultant at Accuvant Labs.
Miller's discovery, first reported by Forbes.com, is the latest potential security flaw found in Apple's product line. Earlier this month, security experts disclosed a bug in Apple's iOS operating system that could allow criminal hackers to gain remote access to iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices, Reuters reported.
Relax, though. Apple plans to fix it with the next software update. Just don't forget to pay the fire insurance on your home this month.
