Artificial intelligence has made huge strides in recent years — it can answer questions, summarize information, and even help plan your next trip. But when it comes to personality, most AI assistants still feel a little… flat.
At the moment, voice-enabled assistants tend to offer a limited selection of tones — usually just a handful of variations that don’t differ all that much. But if technology allowed for more customization, would people actually want their AI to sound like them, or lean into something a bit more distinctive?
That’s exactly what prompted The Word Finder to survey 3,023 AI users across the U.S., asking which accents they’d most enjoy hearing from their digital assistant. The findings suggest that while the tech itself may be cutting-edge, people still gravitate toward voices that feel human, familiar, and full of character.
Here’s how the top choices played out:
#1 Southern
The Southern accent landed firmly in first place — a sign that people want their technology to sound calm, warm, and approachable. There’s something about that slower, reassuring cadence that makes even complex instructions feel easier to follow. If a machine is going to guide us, it seems we’d rather it do so with a bit of charm.
#2 New York City
Coming in second, the New York accent brings a very different energy: fast-paced, confident, and straight to the point. It carries the sense that the speaker already knows the answer — and expects you to keep up. Efficiency, with a bit of attitude.
#3 BBC English (The King’s English)
Few accents carry as much built-in authority as traditional BBC English. Long associated with documentaries and major announcements, it gives even the simplest information a sense of importance. When something is said in this voice, it often feels less like a suggestion and more like a fact.
#4 New England
New England accents, especially from Boston, have a blunt but likable edge. They feel practical and unpolished in the best way — like advice from someone who knows exactly what they’re doing and doesn’t feel the need to dress it up.
#5 California “Valley”
Relaxed, conversational, and a little playful, the Valley accent brings a more casual dynamic to AI. Instead of sounding like a tool, an assistant with this voice might feel more like a friend talking you through things step by step.
#6 Texan Drawl
The Texan accent carries a natural storytelling rhythm, giving instructions a sense of confidence and clarity. It feels less like a checklist and more like guidance from someone who’s done this a hundred times before.
#7 New Jersey
Sitting somewhere between New York directness and Italian-American flair, the New Jersey accent brings personality in abundance. It’s expressive, slightly theatrical, and hard to ignore.
#8 Philadelphia English
Distinctive and full of character, the Philadelphia accent has a rhythm all its own. It feels familiar and grounded — like advice coming from someone in your neighborhood rather than a machine.
#9 Chicago Urban
Chicago’s urban accent strikes a balance between friendly and authoritative. It’s approachable without losing confidence, making it a natural fit for everyday interactions.
#10 Louisiana
Rounding out the list, Louisiana’s mix of Cajun and Creole influences gives it a musical quality that stands out. It’s rich, expressive, and full of personality — even simple instructions would feel more memorable delivered this way.
