- It’s never as hard as you think it’s going to be.
- They will, eventually, be ok without you.
- No matter how cathartic it may seem to be dramatic or tell your boss to fuck off, it’s always better to be professional. Give two weeks (at least), have a letter ready, and be honest but diplomatic. Trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way.
- Don’t make your work business public. No blogs, facebook, letters nailed in the town square. That stuff never dies.
- You have a right to quit a job that doesn’t make you happy, or where you see no room for growth, or where you are unfulfilled or feel disrespected. But you don’t have a right to find a new job that you love. That is an earned privilege, and takes a lot of hard work to find the right fit.
- Before you quit, talk to your boss. They might surprise you!
- I quit a lot of jobs before I found one that I really love. Sometimes, you luck out.
- Don’t sell yourself short, and when you make moves, make sure they aren’t lateral. That being said, it is better to be at the bottom of a job you love than at the top of one you hate.
- Quitting feels better than being fired, but being fired often means getting paid out, which is sweet. Still, I’d rather not be fired.
- Write a transition document for the next person in your position if you can find the time in your last 2 weeks. It really helps to know how things worked before you when you first start, and often your boss doesn’t know the minutia around your processes and steps.
Well put. This should be handed out on a photocopied sheet to all high school kids who will ever have to get jobs.
