100 Words on Love, by Gabe Durham
–
The new “both of us working from home” skill set includes ignoring each other: headphones & stonefaces. It feels bad to get too good at it, so we each sometimes run the risk of pestering the other with nonessentials. She makes me watch some acquaintance’s cute kid dance. Or when she reenters the living room from a brief visit to the kitchen, I’ll grin up at her as if I’ve made a joke immediately after discovering what a joke is. This honors an older, more instinctual code: I make a point to listen to whatever renders me dumb.
