100 Words on Love, by Sean Beaudoin
–
Love is fifteen and stumbling into a Hüsker Dü show in a Firestone Tire store basement, no tickets or security, just a bunch of kids and crusty punks who put up the band on their couches afterward. Love is absorbing brute distortion from three feet away, no stage, just sheets of plywood, cranking out dozens of tunes while sweaty teens moshed and sang and giddily dove off amps, impervious to pain. Love is the parking lot after, vans and smokes and rising summer heat. Love is hunkering under a freeway exit, talking up two girls in purple skirts, eardrums so fried you can barely hear your best friend brag.
