Every year the same thing happens on busy routes. A passenger opens the booking page, picks a train and finds WL 60 or worse in every class.
Most people then start looking at other trains, other dates or a bus. What many do not know is that the same train may still have confirmed seats. They are simply not showing up from the passenger’s own station.
redRail Confirm, a feature on the IRCTC-authorised platform from redBus, is designed to help you find these seats.
Why a Full Train May Not Be Full
Indian Railways does not release all the seats on a train from one station. Seats are divided into quotas for different stations along the route.
So a train from Mumbai to Bengaluru may be fully booked for passengers starting at Pune. At the same time, a few berths may still be open for passengers starting at Mumbai CST, which is the train’s first station.
A regular search only shows the passenger the status from the station they typed in. The other seats stay hidden unless someone goes looking for them.
How the Feature Works
redRail Confirm checks whether the same train has confirmed seats from a different station on the route. If it finds them, it shows the passenger a booking option along with the details.
Consider a passenger travelling from Pune Junction to Bengaluru City on the Udyan Express. The direct search shows a waitlist. redRail Confirm may show that seats are available if the ticket is booked from Mumbai CST.
The ticket is then booked from Mumbai CST to Bengaluru City, with Pune Junction marked as the boarding station. The passenger does not go to Mumbai. They board at Pune, the same as they had planned.
The booking screen shows all of these details clearly before payment. It lists the booked station, the boarding station, the destination, the class and the number of seats available.
What Passengers Should Know Before Booking
The fare is charged from the station where the ticket is booked, not from the boarding station. In the example above, the passenger pays the fare from Mumbai CST to Bengaluru City.
This means the ticket costs more than a direct Pune to Bengaluru fare. For many passengers, paying a little extra for a confirmed berth is a better deal than a waitlisted ticket that may never clear.
The boarding station printed on the ticket matters. Passengers should board only at that station.
After booking, passengers can check the PNR status to see their confirmed berth, coach number and boarding station. It is worth checking once more after the reservation chart is prepared, a few hours before departure.
When It Makes Sense to Use It
redRail Confirm is most useful when a passenger has a fixed travel date and cannot change it. This is common during festivals, weddings, exams and family emergencies.
It also helps on routes where waitlists rarely clear. On heavy routes in the festive season, a WL 40 ticket may still be on the waitlist on the day of travel.
Passengers who can change their dates may still want to check other days first. But for anyone who must travel on a set day, it is one more option worth looking at before settling for a waitlist.
Other Options on the Same Platform
Sometimes no seats can be found even this way. In that case, the Connecting Trains option shows journeys made up of two trains with a change at a station on the way.
Passengers who decide to book a waitlisted ticket can add the Confirm or 3X Refund option, now called Alternate Trip, on selected trains. If the ticket is still fully waitlisted after the chart is made, they get a 3X refund benefit to book another train or bus. Terms and conditions apply.
For trips that might change, free cancellation is available on selected trains and classes. It lets passengers cancel within the allowed time and get the full fare back without railway cancellation charges.
Booking and Help
For train booking, passengers can log in with the IRCTC user ID and password they already use. Offers and coupon codes can be applied at checkout when available.
If a passenger has a question about a ticket, boarding station or refund, redRail’s customer care team is available 24×7 to assist. Support is offered in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil, with plans to introduce additional languages in the future.
redRail Confirm is available on the redRail app and website. Passengers planning festive travel are advised to book early and check all available options before choosing a waitlisted ticket.
