Do you ever
envy strangers you see
on the Internet?
Yesterday we (meaning me) had some fun parodying a rather absurd Buzzfeed post dedicated to Instagram photos of a man living an extremely lavish lifestyle.
It showed piles of cash, many photos of expensive cars, selfies featuring the subject’s sculpted physique and various photos of him with large groups of young women (and one with his mom).
They suggested in the post that he was “the most interesting man on Instagram”, but I can honestly say that the experience of peeking into his life didn’t arouse my fascination. In fact, the feeling that dominated me as I scrolled down the post was the exact opposite of interest–I was bored. Sure, the man was living A life, but it wasn’t one I particularly wanted for myself.
But that doesn’t mean I’m immune to feelings of online envy. It’s a human emotion and I’m mostly human when the weather’s right. But instead of coveting fat stacks, six packs and sweet racks (man, I am so proud of that sentence), I tend to get more jealous over things like Twitter followers and comment counts.
I acknowledge that my priorities are no less effed up.
So, how about you? Do you ever resent the success or happiness of strangers you come across online? How do you deal with it? Have you ever found it causing your inner troll to let loose?
