How long do you
listen to a song
before you dismiss it?
Do you wait for the chorus? The first lyric? Do you even make it past the first note?
I’m finding my musical tolerance is getting much better as I grow older. I’m much more accepting of music that doesn’t fit my specific approval criteria than I was in the past and have even come to strongly embrace genres I once passionately disdained (I’m so addicted to 70s dance music, you could say I have a fever–a disco fever if you will).
What I once found cheesy, I still find cheesy, but now I’m capable of finding that cheesiness charming or even inspirational. I’d like to think this is a sign of maturity, but I just purchased, watched and enjoyed King Kong Vs Godzilla on Blu-ray, so it’s probably something else.
How about you? Have yours tastes changed? Or are you as musically militant now as you were in your teens?
Hmm. Mostly, if testing out a new (for me) artist, I will listen to three-four songs before deciding “this is not for me”. It’s rare for me to listen to just one song. I usually compile lists of stuff I’d like to sample, from magazine and paper reviews, from internet sites and new album lists, etc. A good number of those turn out not to be lasting relationships, but it’s not unusual that I make listen to a full album before making that decisions. Auto-tuning is right out. I will leave stores without purchases when that crap is playing.
If it has a country twang in it AT ALL, it is immediately dismissed for me. 🙂
For a song I’ve never heard before, I usually listen at least to the chorus before I decide if I’ll keep listening or not. If it’s one I already know I don’t like, it’s change that tune in about 5 notes.
