I found a very unique pink rock on the sandy Jalama Beach.
My friend’s daughter immediately asked if she could have it. I hesitated. I didn’t want to part with it. I reluctantly handed it over. She promptly threw it in the ocean and it was swept away with the tide.
I was crushed. Literally.
Barely a moment later, the waves rushed in, bringing an abundance of new rocks. Some were even more unique than the one I originally parted with.
Next, the waves carried many more rocks than I could possibly manage.
I laughed at the irony of my fear.
As with everything, we often cling to and hold tight the things we love because we fear loosening our grip or letting go will leave us empty handed. The truth is, when we surrender, and leave our hands and hearts open, we are free to accept and invite even greater possibilities than we first imagined.
When I made this connection, I immediately wanted to go write about it and I told my five-year-old beach partner I was going to go write for a bit. She then gave me another reminder I needed, when she said, “Okay, I’m going to be in the water.”
I was at a gorgeous beach on the coast of California, and I knew should be enjoying the ocean and the moments as they arrive.
Presence is often a problem for me.
After her gentle and innocent reminder, we got back to gathering rocks. I told my rock collection partner she was good at her job. Without a thought, she replied, “I know.”
Suddenly, she was three for three and earned her ice cream treat we discussed earlier. This little gem is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable therapists I’ve had thus far.
Lessons are everywhere if we are open to them.
