Sadness is profitable for many people. So is fear. Books, medications, professionals, companies, industries, the media in general, there is a huge contingent of people who survive and even get rich at the expense of others’ insecurities. Logically, there are good intentions among those who deal with the sadness of others, but for many, it is interesting that there are always insecure citizens, spending money to escape what makes them vulnerable.
Self-help books abound on bookstore shelves, motivational videos abound on YouTube, as well as catchphrases of the type follow firmly on social networks. Lectures, conferences, and symposiums that deal with related topics are recurrent. Today, coaches, in fact, are in great demand, to the point of being questioned by psychologists, who see their spaces diminished by them.
People, as you can see, need more and more help, outlets, escapes, relief for the soul.
This century seems to be the century of depression, dissatisfaction, sadness, a century of sick souls. And this is serious. This should lead us to seek the causes of this generalized malaise, to combat what makes people sick, instead of just focusing on what alleviates its consequences. Many evils, moreover, would have a more effective combat if efforts were channeled towards their causes and not their effects, as is commonly done.
It is not necessary to delve deeply into these issues to realize that the superficiality of relationships, of feelings, as well as the overvaluation of appearances, at the expense of essence, end up sickening our bodies and our souls.
Today, you have to consume, you have to be beautiful, you have to be healthy, you have to be strong all the time. But no one can be all of that, many don’t even come close to that, and sadness comes, along with a void that no purchase can fill, nor botox.
Of course, there are many factors that influence each person’s emotions, such as family environments, genetic conditions, among others, however, the existential void is an urgency that must be combated in its determinants, understanding that what will save us is not just medication or tangible materialities. Psychiatric and psychological follow-up, medications, and therapies are extremely important in this process, yes, but it is necessary to understand that dealing with one’s own feelings involves, above all, accepting oneself in all that one is.
And accepting oneself implies being happy with what one has, with what one sees in the mirror, with what one thinks, regardless of what the media portrays as desirable.
That is why liking yourself, in this context, is an act of rebellion, after all, few things and few people will be able to hurt us, nor will we be able to hurt ourselves, when we accept ourselves, when we love ourselves, when what is inside, our inner self, brings happiness and contentment. Whether in a luxury hotel or in a thatched hut.
