When I decided to write on this topic in the draft of my Medium account, I felt a need to take a break and organize the ideas that were overflowing in my mind.
I took a break for some time but ended up playing games on my iPad instead of jotting down the relevant points. It was entertaining and I crossed level after level. This series of crossing successive levels got disrupted when I ran out of all the lives. I either had to make some payments to resume playing or wait for another hour. All I did was deactivate it and get back to the real business.
This made me realize my commitment to completing this article.
I’m sure that most of you must have been in similar situations as that of mine.
Starting something is always the difficult part.
Let’s dive deeper into the reasons behind it.
1.Going out of the comfort zone
Just like the Law of Inertia in Physics, all of us tend to live in our comfort zone unless any external force challenges us to come out of this comfort zone. This external factor is our “Why” for taking the pain to initiate that task which we often forget to ask.
2. Discomfort associated with unknown trajectories
Starting something involves unknown trajectories which we’re unaware of. We don’t know what rewards are waiting for us on this path. We may sometimes not be able to gauge the uncertainties that we will encounter on the way, that makes the beginning full of doubts and not-so-motivating.
3. Lack of patience
We may not have enough patience to understand the requirements of the process we’ve to undergo to start something or we’re too impatient to sit and chalk out the prerequisites to start something.
4. Available distractions
In this world of technology, it’s so easy to get distracted especially when we’re surrounded by gadgets that keep testing our focus and commitment through multiple notifications from time to time. It becomes so easy to lose the track of progress especially when you’re starting something.
5. Battling with easy dopamines
When we start something, the results aren’t visible immediately. It involves a continuous process of pursuing it while making efforts towards improvements. On the contrary, gadgets surrounding us provide easy dopamines such as notifications on social media, winning in a video game etc, which make it difficult to resume the process.
Just like the situation presented above, my mind procrastinated not because it didn’t have ideas on the topic but because it was given a chance to discontinue the task at hand. Once I’m back at my desk, I have got into the inertia of motion and there’s no turning back.
So, we’ve to be super cautious of distractions while starting something as it is the most difficult part. Make sure to take control of the situation lest distractions should govern it.
In the end, I would just like to remind you that
If you’re not able to see the big picture at the moment, all you can do is just keep going with faith that one day that big picture will be clear to you!
