Do you know someone with a side hustle? It’s far more common than you might think.
A Bankrate survey shows that 36% of adults in the U.S. have a side hustle. Based on the feedback from 2,332 people, the survey shows that side hustlers bring in an average of $891 monthly — up from $810 monthly in 2023. That’s a year-over-year increase of 10%
A 2025 SOFI article notes that the average salary in the United States is $66,622. Depending on where you live, your profession, your family responsibilities, and other factors, that amount may be sufficient. If it isn’t, then a side hustle might be useful for you, too. Whether desiring to supplement your income or establish another stream of revenue, a side hustle might be just what you need this year.
Five options for side hustles if you’re interested in earning more money.
1. Rental Property
One option is to buy one or more rental properties. Of course, the cost of entry might be cost-prohibitive for some. But if you’re interested in getting an investment property, finding tenants, and making passive income every month, now could be the time to get started.
It’s worth noting that owning a rental property means taking on the responsibilities of a landlord.
That’s one reason many people who buy real estate to rent out hire property managers.
A reputable property manager can help you screen tenants, advertise vacant units, collect rent, perform maintenance and repairs, offer customer service to tenants, and much more.
If you want to retain a property manager, find one close by. For instance, you need a Round Rock property manager if your property is in Round Rock, Texas. A long-distance service provider won’t be as responsive as you need if there’s an emergency.
2. Ridesharing
Do you love to drive and meet new people? If so, a side hustle to consider is ridesharing. According to ZipRecruiter, the average hourly earnings for a rideshare driver in the U.S. is $21.12. Remember, that’s the average. It can be as much as $49.04 hourly, but as low as $9.62 hourly.
If considering ridesharing as a side hustle, you should understand that the market could reach 99.94 million users by 2029. Statista adds that ridesharing services in the U.S. experienced increased demand during the pandemic since consumers wanted private transportation options. So, ridesharing could be a good side hustle if you want to make extra dough.
3. Personal Fitness Trainer
According to the CDC, adults need a minimum of 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly. You can break that up and do a half-hour daily, five days per week.
Most people don’t get nearly enough physical activity for optimal health. Sometimes the lack of exercise is due to a lack of motivation. That’s where personal fitness trainers come into the picture. You should complete a recognized certification to become a personal fitness trainer. But it’ll be worth it if you have a passion for helping people get fit.
4. Landscaping or Gardening
According to Jobber, landscapers can rake in $34,570 annually on average. Cutting grass, weeding gardens, and trimming trees and shrubs are part of the job description. If you want to help homeowners maximize curb appeal by beautifying the exterior of their residences, landscaping is one way to go about it. It can be a great side hustle.
5. Home Repair Services
Are you the sort of person who likes to do your own home renovations and repairs? If so, those DIY skills can help create the perfect side hustle. Whether you want to install flooring, bathtubs, or kitchen cabinets, you can make some money as a handyman.
When it comes to side hustles, the sky’s the limit. You can choose from one of the five mentioned here, or find something else. But when you choose the right one, you’ll get to do something you enjoy and make some money.
